Welcome to The Teacher's Notebook!
Hi! I am Jennifer Justice Smith, and I am pleased to have just completed my nineteenth year of teaching in South Carolina. Well, actually I have taught a lot longer than that... I began teaching at age two years old to my baby dolls and stuffed animals, and I haven't stopped yet! Teaching is definitely my calling and purpose in life! =)
My education journey in South Carolina has been very diverse and rewarding. I have been a behavior interventionist, behavior specialist, reading interventionist, middle school reading and social studies teacher, elementary reading and social studies teacher, supervising teacher, cooperative teacher, mentor, lead teacher, adjunct professor, and a Master Teacher working with other teachers from surrounding areas. In 2005, I became a National Board Certified Teacher and was honored as Teacher of the Year. Through these opportunities, I became involved in the "how to" parts of education. As a public education advocate, I have served as an elected CERRA Advisory Board Member. I am currently a member of the Palmetto State Teacher's Association and was recently elected to their Board of Directors. I am a member of the SC Governor's Educational Advisory Board. And most recently, I was one of 12 SC Teachers to participate in the Center for Teaching Quality's first SC Teacher Leadership Cohort for teachers that want to become "Teacherpreneurs" which is leading without leaving the classroom. I would love to hear your thoughts on this innovative idea. =)
I am married to my high school sweetheart, Frank Smith, and we have one 13 year old son, Will, (yes... Will Smith!!) who keeps us busy with all of his sports. We love to travel, spend time with family and friends, and attend Clemson football games. Go Tigers! My husband is a pastor, basketball coach, FCA Chaplain, and a special education assistant/mentor. He is my hero!
